Monterey County Inmate Search

Monterey County inmate records cover people currently in the County Jail at 1414 Natividad Road, Salinas. A Monterey County jail roster lookup runs through the Sheriff's official In Custody Log. The Jail Operations Division houses about 1,100 people across 31 separate housing units that range from single cells to open dormitories. The jail receives prisoners from police agencies in the county, CDCR for parole violations, Probation for probation violations, and the Superior Court after sentencing. The county jail roster is a current-custody list, so a name drops off the roster after release or transfer.

How to Search the Monterey County Jail Roster

The official Monterey County inmate search tool is the Sheriff's In Custody Log. The page is the public source for current custody information and booking numbers. Other Sheriff jail pages repeatedly tell families to use the log to find a booking number before sending mail or making a deposit. The log is an embedded interface, so it loads inside the Sheriff's page rather than as a stand-alone form.

  1. Open mcso.countyofmonterey.gov and pick In Custody Log from the jail menu.
  2. Use the search or name filter on the embedded log.
  3. Read the result row: name, booking number, housing location, booking date, charges.
  4. Write down the booking number; it is needed for mail, deposits, and Smart Communications messaging.
  5. Note the housing unit; the family visiting schedule is organized by housing unit.
  6. If the name is not on the log, the person may have been released; call (831) 755-3782 to verify.
  7. For state prison custody, use CDCR CIRIS; for federal inmates, use the BOP locator.

Below is the Sheriff's official In Custody Log page, the same site referenced for booking-number lookups.

The Sheriff page is the only current-custody source the county publishes; for any name that has dropped from the log, see the released inmates page.

How Booking Works in Monterey County

The Jail Operations page says booking uses iris scan, digital imaging, and digital fingerprint scanning. Fingerprints are transmitted electronically to the Department of Justice in Sacramento. All bookings are computerized. Classification then assigns housing based on charges, prior record, medical and mental-health needs, and security level. Video arraignment and video conferencing reduce transport risk and cost. The Sheriff About page lists 324 sworn deputies, 165 civilian employees, and a $166M annual budget for the office.

  1. Arresting agency books the person at the Main Jail intake.
  2. Iris scan, digital photo, and digital fingerprint scan are recorded.
  3. Booking record is entered into the computer system.
  4. Classification reviews charges and prior record to set housing.
  5. Inmate is moved to the assigned housing unit.
  6. Court calendars arraignment, often by video link.
  7. Bail can be posted online through GovPayNow with Pay Location Code #6519.

Family Visitation Schedule

Visiting is organized by housing unit. Visitors arrive one hour before the visit start time to reserve an appointment. One adult and one child may enter at a time. Cell phones, recorders, and cameras are not allowed. Service dogs trained for disability assistance are allowed with documentation and proper markings. Parolees need written parole-agent permission. Convicted felons must complete the 4571 PC form with Facility Commander preapproval.

Scam Warning for Monterey County Inmate Families

On May 11, 2026, the Sheriff issued a press release warning families that scam callers were impersonating Sheriff employees and demanding payment for fake "early release" deals. The scam included offers of $1,200 bail with ankle monitor and weekly payments, or an $1,800 flat fee. The Sheriff said the office does not demand money through unverified phone calls. If you get a call like this, hang up and verify with the jail at (831) 755-3782. For other release-time questions, see the released inmates page.

Classification, Healthcare, and Programs

The Jail Operations Division runs the Classification Unit, which assigns each inmate to a housing unit based on charges, prior record, medical and mental-health needs, behavior, and security level. Sentenced inmates may live in open dormitories and join work crews. Unsentenced inmates stay in secured housing and do not participate in work crews. The on-site infirmary holds in-house medical, psychiatric, and dental staff under the corrections healthcare partner.

In November 2025 the Sheriff announced a five-year, five-month, $139M contract with Correctional Healthcare Partners (CHP Monterey) for medical, dental, mental-health, and Jail-Based Competency Treatment services. The contract supports a significant medical and competency caseload at the campus and ties into Department 10's Criminal Mental Health calendar at the Salinas Courthouse.

Programs for sentenced inmates include educational and vocational classes, religious services, library access, and drug or alcohol programs. More than 250 volunteers support programs across the campus. The Re-Entry Resource Center, opened October 23, 2025, links pre-release inmates to community resources for housing, workforce, and behavioral health. See released inmates for the reentry workflow.

Communications: Calls, Messaging, and Video Visits

The Sheriff Incarcerated Person Communications page sets out three vendor systems that families should keep separate. ConnectNetwork handles commissary trust deposits. Smart Communications and SmartInmate handle scanned personal mail, electronic messaging, phone and tablet, legal mail, and video visitation. iCare handles care packages. Confusing the three is a common cause of failed deposits or undelivered mail.

For video visits, register at SmartInmate.com, connect to the incarcerated person, submit the video-visit application, and follow the listed rules. Phone deposits use 866-516-0115 for the Smart Communications phone service. No-contact orders between a visitor and the defendant or victim mean visits are not permitted. Below is the official communications page.

The communications page also notes that released inmates have 30 days to log in at SmartInmate.com with the booking number and password to download messages, photos, and postal mail for free.

Monterey County Jail Ombudsman

The Corrections Ombudsman is the liaison to families, community members, and stakeholders who need help with an incarcerated person. The Ombudsman oversees grievance tracking, answers requests from incarcerated persons, attorneys, and families, and coordinates complaint responses. Contact (831) 755-3877 or Ombudsman@countyofmonterey.gov. For ADA help related to custody or visiting, write ADAHelp@countyofmonterey.gov or call 831-755-3743.

The Ombudsman is independent of the housing classification process and the medical chain of care. Complaints about medical or mental-health care can also be routed to the Sheriff's healthcare partner under the November 2025 contract. Attorney visitation runs separately through the Smart Communications professional appointment process effective January 29, 2025.
